Buffy’s return

I know it’s October. Hallowe’en is imminent, and it’s a time for ghosts, ghouls and vampire slayers, but this is not about that Buffy.

Buffy’s Cove is back!!!! 🙂

Yeah, I’m excited too! I sent Harry over there to take a few photos, and I popped in myself to see the new look Buffy’s at its new location.

In time honoured tradition…new readers start here 🙂 Buffy’s was one of the oldest nudist locations on the grid. In existence as long as I’ve had an SL account. I’m not sure what the reasoning behind it all was, but memory tells me Tess, who now owns ‘Naked Dreams’ on the Eden Estate was whole or partly responsible for Buffy’s, she then built an almost exact replica of the original Buffy’s (as Naked Dreams), and then Buffy’s closed. Some of the regulars at Buffy’s then set up Su Casa. And now Buffy’s is back as Buffy’s. (Phew! I hope I’ve got all of that right).

Anyway it looks terrific. A nice compact build, just the sort of place to encourage sociability once word gets out.

Rather than try to provide a text when I haven’t fully experienced it yet is silly, so the remainder of the words on this post, plus the photos, are Harry’s.

Those of you familiar with the old Buffy’s will immediately recognise the landing-stage TP entry point. A familiar look, but thereafter things are markedly different. And who chooses to ignore the sage advice at the entry. I for one won’t be making eye contact with anyone while eating a banana.

harry buffys cove2_001b

The focal point of the build is this crashed aeroplane. I’ve never seen the TV series ‘Lost’, but isn’t it about plane crash survivors? Can anyone enlighten me if the intended vibe at the new build is of ‘Lost’?

harry buffys cove3_001b

As at the old Buffy’s, the ‘Hollywood’-styled signage will be familiar in style.

harry buffys cove7_001b

I tp’ed in at sunset, and the colours were so striking I didn’t even try to change the ‘time of day’ light settings throughout my stay. I was just captivated by the colouring, which made taking bad photos impossible.

harry buffys cove9_001b

Well…there’s a hamburger-stand at the sim. Must be selling dodgy burgers or dogs, because I felt a bit ill and lay down. When I woke up I found I was on a mattress, in the trash area. A nice little pose 🙂

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I don’t usually do hunts. Not enough time and certainly not enough patience for them.

But here’s a hunt I do fully support and will make an effort to do at least part of, simply because it’s an issue close to my heart, having lost one family member to breast cancer and had two others lucky enough to survive it -thanks to early detection.

So…don’t you be blind to the signs, as the hunt title suggests, or blind to the habit of checking your breasts for lumps or anything ‘strange’. The Mused inworld presence, and hunt start, is here. Be sure to read the information provided regarding breast cancer.

You’ll find full details at the Mused blog.

I don’t think I’m raining on anyone’s parade to say that the next issue of SLN is going to be focusing on ‘non-white/western attitudes to naturism’. Why? We’ve got a healthy number of readers from across Asia. If we accept the Bosphorus River (it spearates the two halves of Istanbul, Turkey, with west Istanbul perceived as being in Euroe, east Istanbul in Asia) as the gateway to Asia, then the continent is massive, from the Bosphorus River to Taiwan.

In between? The Indian sub-continent and China. Both will make their mark on the SL & RL global economy in the next ten years, mark my words. In fact, I do believe we shall see a seismic shift in the thrust of SL over the next decade, away from a US/western European axis, to that of an Asian one.

We already have sizeable Indian and a smaller Chinese SL community in world. These (as well as Brazil’s) will grow.

Some of you may remember that an ‘international’ issue of SLN was abandoned over a year ago. At the end of this month, we’re going to try again.

For the title of this post I’ve used Desi/Videsi (‘desi’ is pronounced ‘deshi’, as in Bangla-Desh‘) which references the ‘Desi’ (Indian) community and ‘Videsi’ (non-Indian). While it directly references India’s names for ‘domestic’ and ‘foreign’ groups (and products, and cultures) it could equally apply to other cultures and nationalities. Attitudes change between the indigenous population and ex-pats. And this can often be seen in changes to attitudes between a home-grown audience (the ‘desi’s) and the diaspora. Particularly with regard to issues of sexuality and naturism. Attitudes may vary between generations, between the Asian born parents and the western-born (or raised) children of immigrants.

With all of this (and more) in mind, we approach SLN10 as ‘the international edition’, and attempt to ‘get under the skin’ of non-western SL users. Explore their attitudes to life, in general, and to naturism (we are SL Naturist magazine, after all).

Arriving towards the end of the month, hopefully it may provide an insight into what makes non-western SL users tick, and where they see SL headed.

Ella adds….’Indeed, Babs. Work is well advanced on SLN10, and the expectation is of a Hallowe’en publishing date -since we don’t really grab Hallowe’en as a particularly great event, unlike much of the rest of the SL blogosphere.  The international edition is one I’ve wanted to produce for a long time, and a prior attempt failed. Readers should note that we aren’t drilling down on ‘India’ as the focus, simply because of the Desi/Videsi title. The hope is to explore much of the non-western, white world, and how those users and readers find SL’.

Abelftoft Nudist Village (2)

I’ve received a delightful notecard from Jarl Ironfist regarding the whole process of Abeltoft (see our first blog entry on the place here and visit Abeltoft here).

Jarl explains that the sim has evolved, and is evolving, from a Gorean sim (I guess that makes sense in the context of a more ‘relaxed’ dress sense 🙂 ) to embrace a sense of a game-within-a-game, in that each tenant farmer grows crops, which require a bit of ‘hands on’ attention, and the butcher can sell meat to the baker (or grower of grains, more accurately) and the excess goes to help paying for land tiers.

A tranquil naturist area exists away from the farms

Although it’s fun watching the animals.

While exploring I found a crop that I think is rice, almost ready for harvest.

And even those who do engage in the farming RP deserve some fun. Here, I tried their zip wire, possibly an SL first for me.

Interested? I am. While I wouldn’t envisage becoming a farmer within Abeltoft myself -this blog keeps me more occupied out of world than in it, and I simply wouldn’t have the time to do both- I certainly think this whole idea is remarkably exciting. At last! A way for SL players to occupy themselves in a realm of (money) production that doesn’t involve clothing or the sex-trade! Imagine if the concept was extended across the grid. Imagine if it were possible -on entry to the game- to determine one’s field of production (arts, farming, publishing, clothing, sex-trade…and a whole other raft of possibilities, even electrician, plumber, carpenter, baker, butcher, etc) so that you could ‘earn’ a living. Imagine earning bit coins (Abeltoft’s currency) by ‘wiring’ someone’s new home, for example. In exchange for your labour you could earn something that you know. Imagine buying a reel of electric cable for a bit coin, then ‘installing’ it (in a utilities section of next generation SL homes) for two bit coins and ‘earning’ a living?

The possibilities are endless.

Granted, there are those who wish to come into SL for a bit of social (or cyber!) interactivity, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It has its place, and I guess that’s more my way of running a SL than those at Abeltoft…but nevertheless, the whole concept is, well, visionary!

Jarl goes on to tell me that there’s essentially two distinct groups operating within Abeltoft -those growing crops in a roleplay context and naturists. It’s possible to interact with those in the RP side of things, obviously, and engage with them, or simply use the sim as a naturist location. There’s a kind of ‘medieval’ feel to the place, again, the Gorean roots are evident in this respect, but I was also reminded as to how some ‘historical’ RL naturist ‘landed clubs’ (i.e. naturist clubs with their own private grounds) look in photographs. The roots of naturism (or ‘nudism’ as it was called then) always show, in photography, members involved in all manner of physical activity, digging out swimming holes, building fences, etc, and the females of the club getting together for a bit of a cook-in prior to a communal dinner. So in all of this the whole vibe of Abeltoft was a blur between the ‘medieval’ and as recently as the 1960s/70s naturist club vibe. Once you understand naturism, in RL historical context, the entire thing just seems to work marvellously well.

The joining fee is there to discourage to discourage ‘griefers’ (as usual there are those who seek to spoil games playing, of whatever hue, in SL) but the joining fee is really quite small, smaller than that expected in other naturist sims.

I’ve got a great sense of excitement about the entire project Jarl is bringing to life, so I joined the Abeltoft community in order to fully explore the sim, and bring you photographs of it in all of its glory. Having now been inside, I can say that even from a naturist perspective, it’s exciting. Beautifully laid out, lots of little places to explore and things to try. I was captivated in the way it all comes together in a relaxed, understated way. I feel that, because of the farming element, Abeltoft would have the potential to become a very sociable sort of SL naturist sim, and the feeling of a community possible. I could imagine sitting around the campfire, at the end of the day, with a bunch of SL folk I know really well in company. I don’t think that sense of a close-knit naturist community has really been present, in my experience, since the demise of the old Manatee naturist sim (from about four years ago). Whenever you visited Manatee there would always be at least 2-3 people you knew very well there, another couple you’d spoken to, and a further bunch that you knew you would become firm friends with. I sense that, given the chance to grow organically, Abeltoft could potentially be the sim where a cameraderie and community can grow.

I feel that, maybe, there are even possibilities to be explored in a context of role-play in SL naturism. More on Abeltoft -both text and photos- either tomorrow (Thursday) or Friday.

Topless Tuesdays

A google search of the words ‘topless Tuesday’ will reveal that it has become something of a meme in the SL blogosphere. I’m not certain of its origins; I know I picked it up via Strawberry Singh’s blog and since then I’ve noticed other blogs pick up on it.

Well, why not? Why not join in? It’s not as if we’re in opposition to the whole idea.

And so we present a small gallery (pix by Harry & Diane) which buys into ‘Topless Tuesdays’.

It isn’t something I’d plan to post every Tuesday, but it’s certainly something we will return to on occasion.

Equilibrium Nude Beach

As the nights drop down, SL activity increases! 🙂 (And that includes us, after the post-summer blues affecting us all!)

There seems to be some sense of new, changed, reconstituted sims popping up, and Equilibrium Nude Beach is another new (to me) naturist location.

I have to say I approached it with some sense of trepidation, due to the lengthy list of sexually orientated tags (including bdsm, I think)attached to it in its description (using the ‘places” menu in search), but -other than a single sex bed I found, isolated on one side of the sim, I didn’t find anything overtly sexual at the sim. On the contrary, it was largely ‘sex free’, and actually had a sense of romanticism around its clubhouse, overlooked by a stage area, with tables set out for dining. Currently, despite the sexual search tags, it looked like it might be a rather delightful place for a romantic dinner.

pookes equilibrium_001b

I tried out their hot tub….under a scorching evening sun, but couldn’t get the water to work.

pookes equilibrium2_001b

LOL! I need to find a significant SL other to share a romantic dinner with. I love the single red rose on the table at the restaurant area.

pookes equilibrium3_001b

The sound was more car-crash in a wreckers’ yard, than anything approximating a rhythm, but I enjoyed hopping onto the drum kit.

pookes equilibrium4_001b

The only sexual item I found was this bed, isolated from the rest of the sim, so it would never be ‘in your face’ if you choose to use Equilibrium for ‘pure’ naturist intent.

Abeltoft Nudist Village

Abeltoft Nudist Village is new to me, both as a location and, possibly more excitingly, as a concept.

Owned by Jarl Ironfist, it looks as though it’s being run as some sort of game-within-the-SL-game, with a collection of what are smallholding farms where, with the aid of a separate currency (Touch Coins), you can buy the things -food, basically- produced within a kind of co-operative farm. Billing itself, also, as a ‘GS market’, I’ve not (yet) been able to establish what ‘GS farming’ (do I sound so…hmmm….urban? 🙂 ).

I’ve not yet joined the group (L$150) to get into the village and see what it’s all about, as I need to explore what the entire concept of it is first, but it would rather appear to allow renters to run their own farm, grow produce and sell it with the ‘Touch Coins’, all in a naturist setting. I hope I’ve got all this correct, it’s basically guesswork on my part, and I’ll follow up with a second report whenever Jarl, whom I’ve IM’ed, comes back to me.

I also sense some degree of ‘medieval’ farming approach (certainly a pre-Industrial Revolution one), judging by the tools available for sale at the marketplace at the village (which you can visit and enter clothed).

What I will say is that, judging by the rules of the village I read that the approach to naturism are absolutely fantastic, from an SLN naturist point of view. No poseballs, 100% genuine naturist intent.

The only photos I was able to grab, by ‘camming’ is a general overview of the farm collective. As you can see, it has a nice look and feel. It will certainly be somewhere I would re-visit, and even join, once I was clearer on the whole concept of the place.

Once again, this post is that rarest of beasts, an SLN post which doesn’t contain nude photography (I always visit new locations clothed, initially, until its genuine naturist intentions are established).

Perhaps the game-play is the main focus, with naturism merely a secondary issue, but the possibilities of such a different form of gameplay should be apparent to everyone. If it’s possible to create an SL job, i.e. farmer, that isn’t either clothes shop owner or sex-industry related, the SL landscape changes enormously. How exciting would that be? Would it be possible to run a (naturist) newspaper, then, within such a concept and for that village’s community? Would it be possible to extend the breadth of the village’s scope to include non-farming possibilites?

A gallery

We take far, far more photos than we can possibly use for SLN. I’ve been tasked to run through the library (in advance of it being ‘wiped’, i.e transferred to an external drive) and picked out a few photos I thought you might like.

Autumn arrives

I’m not sure how it’s looking for you, in your part of the world, but where I live, autumn seems to have arrived, right on cue, on September 23rd, as planned. Leaves already a collection of vibrant yellows, browns, oranges and reds. My local park looked fantastic until a few really wet days resulted in it looking just….wet.

It’s good to be back in SL. Summer is never a good time for me in SL, but as the autumnal equinox arrives, the nights drop down and the autumn sweeps in, I do get to return to SL.

Just back, I’ve not really got going yet on photoshoots with models, nor got caught up with any summer changes to the grid, so I thought Id do a little self-shoot, in autumnal colours, to herald my return to SL and desire to be bringing you a collection of SL photos right through until March, when my SL activity will tail off once more.

The sims are a photographer’s dream right now -it’s hard to take a bad photograph- and I shall endeavour to bring you a few terrific looking autumnal looking photos until the leaves are gone.
