Even a western styled swimming costume is stupid for swimming. But I wouldn’t ask my local pool to change the rules to let me swim nude.

Ella’s post on intolerance, earlier this evening, made me immediately think about this story which I picked up via British media.

Essentially, a Muslim woman in Colorado went to the local swimming pool and was refused entry on the basis she was, to all extents and purposes, fully dressed.

There doesn’t appear to have been any indication it was even the burquini, as photographed above, but the outfit being worn in an interview on local television. There’s a pitifully tearful interview where she enquires why she has to be ‘half-naked’ (oh….please!!!!!!!!!) when swimming in a public pool.

I’m not overly impressed that it has become an issue at all. If I were to visit a mosque, I’d be expected to fully comply with their dress code, barefoot and head covered. When in Rome, do as the Romans. We should not be expecting our pools to be altering their dress codes for ‘religious reasons’ and also having some lawyer flimsily dress this up as a ‘human rights issue’. The woman, and the lawyer speaking on the newsreel, need to grow up a bit.

I found this set of rules for visiting a mosque online. I’m happy to comply with all of them, out of respect for people’s religious beliefs. I’m happy for this woman to comply with all of the pool’s dress code rules while living in America.

She says she has gone public to ‘open a dialogue’ on the matter of pool dress code. Well, you did, dear. And the dialogue is now closed. Our countries (the UK has also had similar pool related dress issues, and another issue here and here), our rules.

In the US, there has been a 74% rise in the number of mosques since 9/11, a figure that denotes we’re a country ready to embrace all the people, all the religions of the world. As a naturist, how would my demand to be permitted to swim nude play out with the pool authorities? Yep, you answered that one in one. They wouldn’t change their rules for me, or other naturists, and I wouldn’t expect them to do so. We will hire pools for private naturist swimming sessions if needs be. Equally, I don’t expect pool authorities to be changing rules to suit a religious minority. If Muslims wish to wear their own swimming attire amongst themselves, then hire a freaking pool to do so.

  1. This article got me thinking about a new take on adult swim. Remember those days at the local Y, and kids had to vacate the pool for 10 minutes or so every hour so adults could have the pool to themselves? What if cities and towns designated certain hours each day for adult sunning? Each day, there would be 2 or 3 adult sunning times, spread over morning, afternoon and evening, where adults were free to go outside in their own yards, wearing nothing at all, without fear of neighbors complaining, or screaming, or calling the cops. Seems fair.

  2. It is fortunate that nobody gets beheaded in this country if you wear all your clothes ina swiming pool. However I think that she has the right not to go to a public pool where she will not respect the rules. If she wants to swim with her clothes on the Rivers,, lakes and oceans are perfect for her purpose. Otherwise, buying or installing her own pool is also a good alternative. She certainlly can claim that she is religiosly persecuted and damn if she is not trying to shove her religion down our throats as well at the same time. This is not about religion, this is a diferent society where the religion is not Muslim. This is about rules of a society that is not dominated by her religion, therefore she will never accept the rules, and at the same time she will never be accepted for trying to impose her religion by force in this society.

  3. My perspective is that if people have religious beliefs they have every right to practice them as they wish, but should not expect a general sense of secularism in a country, as might be applied to north America and Europe, alter its perspective to suit a minority.

Naturism is a minority, but we’d not dream of making demands to swim nude in public pools, as Apricot said in her piece, but rather hire out a pool for naturist swim sessions where the lifestyle choice of social nudity (which can more or less be equated to religion as a lifestyle choice) can be practiced amongst fellow ‘converts’ to that lifestyle.

I’m not sure how it works in other parts of the world, but I know that in the UK pools may be hired for ‘private’ events, be they scuba diving classes, learn to swim classes, children’s birthday parties and naturist swim sessions. If Muslims wish to wear a ‘burkini’ they should also have the right to do so (and as this woman eventually appeared to do by hiring a hotel pool) but not at the expense of others, nor in contradiction to what appears to be patently clear dress code rules laid down by Commerce city’s authorities.
