Stephen Gough, the ‘Naked Rambler’, has apparently made legal history in his court appearance today.

Gough is some of a cause celebre in the UK, and divides opinion amongst naturists. Friends fear that, by refusing to dress under any circumstances, he potentially faces a lifetime in prison.

It appears that the body hair debate refuses to go away, with the question of whether armpit hair on Chinese women is appalling, or in keeping with the teachings of Confucius.

The Chinese feminist who has raised the debate is Li Tingting, who has previously been detained by the authorities for staging an ‘Occupy the Mens’ Room’ protest.

We often think of China as a ‘closed shop’ but it appears that, as with the samizdat distribution of ideas into the former Eastern Europe, there are aspects and ideas that we would associate with western life, in this instance body hair as a feminist statement, that are percolating into Chinese society.
